As many around the World struggle with mental health due to isolation, fear of the COVID-19 disease, financial difficulties associated with COVID-19, amongst other issues, there is one positive that is coming out during this dark time. In Thessaloniki, Greece, the residents are coming together despite these grim times. Although there is much to stress about, the Greeks could seem to be less phased by the chaos. Walking along the piers near the water in Thessaloniki, I observed many families sharing moments with each other. Greece is much stricter than the USA in terms of how they deal with COVID, as citizens must send a text message to a specific number in order to travel outdoors, businesses are not allowed to operate in person, amongst other restrictions. Even the holiday of Christmas is having its restrictions being put in place. Yet, despite these inconveniences, the Greeks are finding ways to stay positive.
The calmness amongst the Greeks is a result of getting outside to go for a walk, do socially distanced yoga in the park, or appreciating nature through leaving the windows open, etc… Being extroverted allows the Greeks to maintain their relationship with nature and appreciate their Country’s beauty, even though they cannot do it to the greatest extent (due to restrictions). By feeling the crisp air, going for a walk, amongst other activities, they are able to maintain their mental stability. Keeping their minds in tact and fresh allows them to remain calm during these uncertain times. For readers, particularly in areas of the world that are not warm and walkable, opening your blinds and seeing the daylight is a start. If you have a coat, go walk briefly in your local park, short run or exercise at the gym near your residency. The activities listed are examples of what one could be doing to remain calm during these times, just like the Greeks.
As of now, the Greek Government has not set in stone a date that they will lift the nationwide lockdown, although they will reevaluate the Country’s situation on January 7th. In the meantime there are many ways the Greeks, and others reading this article, can remain calm, positive, and productive during your quarantine period. Other content will be released regarding Greece’s situation with COVID-19 on a later date to keep outsiders in the circle with the latest information. To all, enjoy your holidays and family this season and stay healthy.
