Thessaloniki: Greece’s Live Music Hub

The cold, rainy, cloudy winters and slightly further distance from the beach is not the main separation Thessaloniki has from Greece’s largest city of Athens. In fact, it is the live music scene that draws many to Thessaloniki, both internationally and domestically. Live music bars include punk rock, rap/hip-hop, jazz, heavy metal, electronic music amongst other genres are all located in Thessaloniki. The diversity in music within a small city is not replicated any where else within Greece, or even Europe.

The amount of different tastes of music and their establishments is mostly a factor of the large population of youth and young adults in Thessaloniki. Many Universities are located in Thessaloniki, which draw mostly students from Greece, Germany, France, Italy, and the UK. Whether it is a Monday afternoon of Saturday night, there can be a music event found at one of the live music bars or concert halls. Aside from the bars and halls, sidewalk bands and musicians scatter the waterfront performing from dawn until dusk. With no shortage of choices and events to attend, Thessaloniki has claimed the national title for being the Music hub of Greece, according to locals. The music scene brings about a certain liveliness to the city, which would otherwise be a quiet, family oriented place to live without the University and Music population. It is not an out of control scene either, the bars, clubs, and youth are very respectful and do not destroy property or make excessive noise, as found in other music hubs globally. People in Greece, particularly Thessaloniki, enjoy the music, and use it as a social event, rather than a mindless party with noise in the background. Beautifully, well written lyrics accompanied by wonderfully sounding instruments are composed by every genre that resides in Thessaloniki. Here, Thessaloniki, is where people appreciate music for its lyrics, instruments, rhythm, and use it for expression of thoughts mainly emotionally and politically, amongst other thoughts. It is the art of music that is practiced here, and is worth exploring when in Thessaloniki.

Katouni Street, popular for its live music and restaurant venues. Thessaloniki, Greece

Certain districts contain more live music bars than others, in particular on Katouni street, and on both sides of Egnatia street past downtown Thessaloniki. Also accompanied by high end dining, many music bars and events are held in these areas. It is perfect for having a meal before seeing a nice opera, exposure to traditional Greek music, rock/metal, rap, and perhaps even the dance club/nightlife scene. What makes the scene most enjoyable in Thessaloniki is the authenticity of it. There is no touristy, trashy, or poor taste in music to be found at any of these live music venues. This is where those who embrace the culture and lifestyle of their music genre come to socialize, drink, and play cards, pool, board games, etc… The best part of these venues is there is no exclusion, even if you are not a fan of the specific genre when you walk into the bar, they will treat you like one of them. They are truly genuine, kind people across the board every club, bar, and venue you will attend here in Thessaloniki. The friendly nature of the Greeks, accompanied by the beautiful city, great music, delicious food that dominate the positive attitude of these live music bars.

Of course, due to travel restrictions and Covid-19 protocols within the country of Greece, these bars are not able to be open until further notice. Yet, once travel is allowed again and the venues open up, they are a must visit while in Thessaloniki or in Greece. An experience you cannot replicate anywhere else from the great music, friendly people, and tasty food are the main reasons to explore this scene in Thessaloniki.
