Words to Impress Your Greek Friends

There are many websites on the internet that teach basic Greek to those who seek it, yet they do not do a good job of diving into how the common person speaks. Although those websites do teach how to effectively communicate through greetings, commerce, ordering food, amongst other fields, they do not add words only the locals will know. These phrases will allow you to impress the locals, and your Greek friends, as they are very specific to the language and culture.

Μου λειπεις – I miss you friend (pronounced moo-lee-piece). This is a very versatile phrase as it can be used with friends and family, and even for a relationship. Natives use this phrase, and is not taught on the internet or in Greek language books. Greeks value love and kindness, and this phrase is sure to get their attention and impress them. Do not be surprised if their response is “where did you learn that phrase”.

Τελιος – perfect (pronounced tell-e-os). After being served a fantastic meal at a restaurant or when being asked about how do you like something, say τελιος. It will really get the Greeks happy that a foreigner is that impressed with their services and that you know such words in their language. It is a wonderful complement and usually is said in hospitality settings.

‘Ομορφος – beautiful (pronounced o-mor-fos). Greece has countless beautiful qualities; the nature, the people, the culture, etc… This term can be used for describing watching a wonderful sunset at the beach, the people of Greece and their kindness, the great food, amongst other aspects of Greece. The word has a very positive meaning and Greeks will love it when you use the word around them.

Despite not being the longest of lists, these three words should kickstart your Greek learning and impress your Greek friends. You can use these words in many situations, and they will serve you well around Greeks, or in Greece. Happy Holidays from the blog and Happy New Year!
