Where to Visit in Thessaloniki: Guide to the City

The first thing many do before visiting their desired vacation spot is search for things to see and do there. Seeing the White Tower, walking along the water front, shopping at the stores, are all the mainstream activities that appear for things to do in Thessaloniki. Yet, those are actually not the most exciting things that Thessaloniki offers. Not to discourage my readers from visiting those sites, they are still terrific options, but if you have a short stay duration, I highly recommend visiting the following 5 locations that are worth your time. Some of these destinations one could spend a whole day at, and others perhaps and hour or two max. But is is the fact to say that you expeirenced them and went to them which is what matters.

  1. Thessaloniki Train Cemetery. A short ride from the city of Thessaloniki, there is a train “graveyard” of old train cars and automobiles from the Hellenic Railway Organization left these cars and trains here as a result of failure to sell them. This is an excellent place to visit if you are into art, graffiti in particular, or are looking for a cool place to escape the cities vibrant energy for the afternoon. Interesting sights of rusting train cars being overgrown by the wildlife make quite the experience. Take a look through the photos below to get a better visual on the train cemetery.

2. Bensousan Han. Honestly, there is not a single category to put this one into, as Bensousan Han is many things (literally). In sum, Bensousan Han was housing for travelers and a barn for animals, now a museum and art gallery full of props, art, and also an event space. It is meant to resemble a rustic, outdated barn, but has light colors and modern furniture mixed into the space. You do not have to be invited to an event to enter this space, as it is wide open to the public. The entire space is not open though, as some parts of the space are closed to the public. But the majority of the space is open, so it is definitely worth a visit. See the images below in order to get a better perspective of the space I am referring to.

3. Pasha Gardens, a perfect mix of ancient ruins and a park located in the city center. Although not the largest park in the city, it has a certain look to it that can’t be replicated elsewhere in the city. Close to the premier university in Greece, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, it allows one to enjoy the greenery while being in the city center.

4. MOMus Thessaloniki. Along the port and waterfront, and closer to the eastern end of the city, it holds modern photography and art (when open of course). Amazing waterfront views, cafeteria, and an interesting interior of modern furniture lure many visitors to the museum.

5. Ano Poli. Somewhat mainstream of a place to visit, many locals enjoy walking in Ano Poli, or the upper town. Here, one can enjoy having a great elevated view of the city while walking through the streets filled with cafes and tavernas. Quiet and peaceful, catch anything from a beautiful sunset to a small cafe in the afternoon, Ano Poli is a must visit while staying in Thessaloniki.
